The skin is the largest organ of the human body and fulfils a variety of functions. It protects us from external influences such as UV radiation, pathogens entering our body or injuries. At the same time, it regulates the water balance through the sweat glands, where we can sweat, and ensures the absorption of vitamin D. The structure of the skin consists of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutis.
Epidermis our protective layer
The epidermis is the outermost layer of our skin and serves as a barrier against environmental influences. This layer also contains melanocytes, which are responsible for our individual pigmentation. The more melanocytes there are, the darker the skin. The number of melanocytes is genetically determined. However, due to environmental influences, melanin formation can sometimes no longer be regulated.
The epidermis can be divided into two layers. It consists of the uppermost layer, the so-called horny layer. This is where the keratinised squamous epithelial cells are located. These are the dead skin cells, they gradually keratinise and are secreted by the skin towards the outside. They form the protective layer of our skin.
Less is more: preserve the natural protection of your skin
Therefore, it is important to preserve this outer horny layer. Skin peeling, high-dose vitamin C preparations or, for example, retinol products that are used too often, wear away the protective cells. The skin may be soft and tender at the beginning, but the skin protection is reduced, so that after only a few weeks, skin irritations, pigment shifts and a stressed skin appearance can result in an unhealthy skin appearance.
Urea as an ingredient is used here because it gently removes the upper horny layer without destroying the skin protection. A face cream has a lower percentage of urea than a body cream. Therefore, it should be avoided to use a body cream for the face.
The basal layer, also called the germinal layer, is the lower epidermal layer. It contains the basal cells that later become keratinised and thus provides replenishment for the horny layer and renews itself about every four weeks.
This skin layer also contains the sebaceous glands with their excretory ducts, which secrete the sebum and keep the skin supple. The sweat glands with their excretory ducts cool the body temperature down when the outside temperature is warm or during sporting activities when the body temperature rises.
The dermis – the collagen fibres provide the firm skin in this layer.
Below this is the dermis, which consists mainly of connective tissue. Here we find numerous nerve cells as well as hair follicles and the base of the sebaceous and sweat glands.
Fibroblasts are the most common cell types in this skin layer. They form the popular collagen and elastin. These fibres make up the supportive and connective tissue. They are the popular fibres that give your skin tightness, elasticity and firmness. Blood vessels also pass through this layer to supply oxygen to our cells.
Subcutaneous tissue- fatty tissue for shapeliness and base of important glands
Subcutaneous tissue, also called the subcutis, is the lowest layer of our skin structure and is made up of fat tissue cells. It is a shifting layer between the skin and the muscles. Therefore, in liposuction, for example, a certain layer thickness should be left in place so that the skin does not lie directly on the muscle fascia. This can lead to skin retraction and pain. This layer is crossed by nerves and blood vessels. The base of the hair follicle, hair root, as well as the sweat and sebaceous gland base are found here.
